Restaurant owner killed over $56 beer bill

KUALA LUMPUR, January 28, 2012 - A restaurant owner was brutally slashed to death by a group of customers who refused to pay the RM136 bill (S$56) for their drinks.

The incident occurred at about 12.45am yesterday at Taman Daya, Kepong, when Tan Ching Choon, 46, told the group of seven men that the shop was closing for the day.

However, it is learnt that the men refused to pay the bill for the beers and became rowdy before they used chairs and bottles to assault Tan.
Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rahim Abdullah said the victim ran to the kitchen and took a meat cleaver to defend himself from the group.

"However, in the onslaught by the suspects, the deceased slipped and fell before one of the men grabbed the cleaver and began slashing him," he said, adding that one of the restaurant workers suffered slash wounds on the head and body when he tried to save his boss.

The police arrived after they were alerted, but the suspects had already fled on their bikes and cars.

However, in a series of arrests in the next couple of hours, the police nabbed six suspects, some of them still drunk.

ACP Abdul Rahim said police obtained CCTV images from the restaurant which showed the entirety of the incident. The suspects have been remanded until Feb 2.
